What is my Value...

Many artists have a hard time determining their value. We either undersell ourselves or oversell ourselves. Depending are where you are at in your career will help set a better number, but remember it's not just what number we set to piece, it's the value of ourselves. Too many artists have allowed themselves to be cheated out of what they are worth.

Contracts help set that value and protect you and your time. Some people will come along and insist they don't need one and that we can trust them. Whether it is family or friend, hold you principles and maintain the need for a contract. Set in stone the expectations and pricing before doing any project.

Say NO if a project does not align with your ideals or if you have a feeling a working relationship will not work. It's okay to say NO. I repeat, it's okay to say NO. As artists, we want to make everyone happy and grab every opportunity we can to make sale or get our name out there. If it doesn't feel right, it may not be right. Stand by your ideals and feelings. Other opportunities will come along. This one may not be it.

Stick to your words! Communicate and keep to your word. Maintain a strong level of professionalism. This will help you gain respect with clients, collectors and the art community. Who you are needs to be consistent from person to the next. If you are wishy washy, trust is lost and your value will decrease.

Value is more than your skill and more than what price you put on something. You are worth what you present and how you act. Express your value and who you are with every step you make in your career. Review what your steps and behaviors are now and see if this is something you should sit down and rethink.
